Parent Coaching:
Parenting is a hard job and parents need support too! That said, the support needed doesn't always meet insurance criteria for therapy services. Parent coaching is an alternative option that can meet the needs of parents looking for support.
Parent Coaching Intensives:
As a crisis counselor for 8 years working with youth at an Essex county high school, I have learned that parents need more support with regard to mental health education and resources for their child. Our mental health care system is complex and challenging which makes knowing what to do in times of crisis even more overwhelming for parents. During times of crisis, direct and clinically sound guidance is so important. Unfortunately, parents don't always get this from busy schools, emergency rooms, or primary care doctors. I wanted to create a service through my practice that can provide support for parents who have a child in crisis, or who don't, but want to be proactive in learning more about how to successfully navigate crisis should it occur in the future.
Parent coaching intensives are an opportunity for parents to consult with a licensed clinician who has extensive experience in child and adolescent mental health, and specifically, suicide and self harm prevention, intervention, and safety planning. Since parents are often overscheduled, the option of a one time coaching intensive removes the added pressure to sign on for an ongoing commitment of time. Additionally, mental health care can be costly. Therefore, the goal of the coaching intensive is to equip and empower parents to know how to move forward, after one session, with new knowledge, confidence, and an action plan to help their child thrive.
A 75 minute parent coaching intensive includes:
Assessment of your current situation and your child's needs
Education and guidance about mental health conditions, including suicide prevention and safety planning
Education and guidance on navigating and understanding the various levels of mental health care
Feedback on how to engage your school in supporting your child's mental health needs.
Resources for next steps and ongoing support
Tips and feedback on self-care for the caregiver
